AR-11 CHANGE OF ADDRESS FORM
Immigration and Nationality Act § 265 requires all non-U.S. citizens over 14 years old and remaining in the U.S. for more than 30 days to report a change of address within the United States by filing form AR-11 within 10 days of such change. While this requirement has been a part of U.S. law for 50 years, compliance has not been enforced until 2002. You are now urged to comply in one of two ways:
- by submitting your change of address at USCIS online. The USCIS link for submitting your AR-11 change of address is: https://egov.immigration.gov/crisgwi/go?action=coa. Instructions, eligibility, and the procedure for e-filing your address change appear here.
- by submitting your completed paper form AR-11 by certified mail, and retaining copies of your filed form(s) AR-11 and proof of mailing. Please do not send copies of your AR-11 filing(s) to our office.
NOTE: as indicated on the USCIS AR-11 e-filing page, if you choose to use the online electronic change of address notification, please do not mail in a Form AR-11. On the other hand if you choose not to use this online tool and instead choose to mail in a paper Form AR-11 please understand that doing so will not update your address on any applications or petitions currently pending with USCIS.
Filing of paper form AR-11 does not inform USCIS adjudications centers of your address. Hence, if you have an application pending at a local or regional USCIS adjudications center, you must also inform that office of your change of address to ensure proper communication regarding your filings.
Non-U.S. citizens who are subject to Special Registration with the USCIS must complete AR-11 SR, a version of form AR-11 applicable only to those required to report to Special Registration.
Failure to file form AR-11 is a misdemeanor and can result in a jail term of up to 30 days and/or a fine of up to $200. Failure to file can also result in an individual being taken into custody and removed from the United States.
Form AR-11 requires you to report your name, immigration status (visitor, permanent resident, student, other), country of citizenship, date of birth, present and previous address, name and address of employer or school, port of entry into the U.S., date of entry into the U.S., and the date your stay in the U.S. expires. If your I-94 has expired but you have an extension or change of status pending, note both the I-94 expiration and that the extension/change of status is pending. Note that many individual will not know his/her "A" number. Write "unknown" if you do not know your A number. Each non-U.S. citizen member of your family must file the form upon relocation within the U.S. Form AR-11 SR requires the same information as form AR-11 with the addition of your Fingerprint Identification Number (FIN). An individual obtains a FIN upon Special Registration. Your FIN is written on your I-94 card.
